Mentha pulegium
Quite unlike any other varieties of the mint family. Rather than producing a bushy plant, it grows as a low-lying, creeping half-hardy perennial, making it ideal ground cover. Due to its growing habits its country names include "Run-by-the-ground" and "Lurk-in-the-ditch". It will grow in any type of soil but prefers moist conditions. During its growing season it produces clusters of mauve flowers. It is one of the mints ideal for growing in containers or window boxes as it need not take up too much space. It has a strong flavor and smell so should only be used sparingly in cooking.
Medicinal: Pennyroyal was said to be good for treating headaches. An old herbal states: "A garland of pennyroyal made and worn about the head is of great force against the swimming in the head and the pains and giddiness thereof.
Legends: Years ago pennyroyal was grown in pots and carried on long sea voyages. It was used by sailors to purify casks of drinking water. A pot of pennyroyal grown indoors should keep away mosquitoes and fleas. |
