boutoncrafts

chapeauTransform a simple straw hat into elegant headwear suitable for a summer weddings. Choose a selection of herbs, both leaves and flowers, in colors to match your outfit. The herbs used here include parsley, dill and feverfew. Do not decorate the hat too far in advance of wearing it as the herbs will begin to wilt after a while.

1- Separate the herbs into small sprigs with fairly long stems and stand in water until required.

2- Position small bunches of herbs at the base of the crown. Attach the sprigs to the hat with a needle and thread. Push the needle through from he inside of the hat, loop the thread over the stalks and pass the needle through the straw again to the inside. The thread can then be tied in a tight knot to secure the herbs.

3- Alternatively, attach a wide strip of ribbon in a coordinating color around the base of the crown. Attach to the hat with a few stitches here and there. The herb sprigs can then be sewn onto the ribbon.

4- The sprigs of herbs should all be laid in the same direction, so the flowers or foliage of one bunch overlap and hide the stalks to he previous bunch.

5- Keep the hat in a cool place until you are ready to wear it.
